Fennville's Water in 2026: What Homeowners Need to Know
Fennville's drinking water meets state and federal standards. EGLE's most recent review found the city in compliance, with all tested contaminant levels below action levels and lead and copper within limits at the last triennial testing in 2023.
But "meets standards" and "nothing to think about" aren't the same sentence. Three things are worth a homeowner's attention right now:
The city is replacing 95 lead service lines as part of a $4.1 million water system project. Yours may be one of them — and you're entitled to know either way.
Fennville's wells have a long, documented history of iron problems. That's an aesthetic and plumbing issue, not a health one, and it's not something a municipal system is required to eliminate.
Construction will stir up the pipes. Water main replacement and water tower work reliably produce discolored water events. Knowing what's normal saves a panicked phone call.
Here's the detail behind each.
Where Fennville's water actually comes from
Fennville runs a Type I public water supply on four wells, feeding roughly 89,220 feet of water main and 653 metered connections — including about 185 customers out in Manlius and Clyde Townships.
The well history tells you most of what you need to know about the local groundwater:
Well No. 5 (drilled 1971, 127 feet) was abandoned before 2023 because of high iron content and a weak 400 gpm capacity.
Well No. 4A (1979, 127 feet) has high iron compared to the other wells, plus persistent cloudy-water issues likely caused by trapped carbon dioxide and dissolved oxygen. Despite a 1,200 gpm capacity, it gets used sparingly — and only routed through the city's Iron Removal Plant.
Well No. 6 (1981, 155 feet) is slated for abandonment. It has a failed casing and had persistent bacterial issues that several rounds of treatment and physical modifications could not resolve. It's currently held in reserve for emergencies only.
Well No. 7 (1987, 260 feet) is a main supply well. It's the deepest of the four, and its water is chlorinated at the well house and sent straight into the distribution system.
That last detail matters more than it looks. Water from Wells 4A and 6 passes through the Iron Removal Plant — a horizontal pressure filter built in 2011 with four cells of anthracite over greensand media. Water from Well No. 7 does not. Depending on which wells are running on a given day, what comes out of your tap has taken a different path.
The city is drilling test Well No. 8 now, and plans to convert it to a production well that pumps into the Iron Removal Plant before entering distribution.
The takeaway: this is a shallow, sandy, iron-rich aquifer. The city treats for it. The treatment is sized for regulatory compliance, not for your dishwasher.
What the city is rebuilding, and why
In April 2026, EGLE issued a Finding of No Significant Impact for Fennville's water system improvement project — the final regulatory step before the city can draw on state loan funding.
The project runs about $4.13 million, financed through a 40-year Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loan at 2 percent interest. Because EGLE classifies Fennville as a financially overburdened system, up to $577,800 comes back as principal forgiveness.
The work includes:
A new production well (No. 8), replacing the failing Well No. 6
Water tower rehabilitation — the 250,000-gallon tank on East Main Street dates to 1972 and needs its exterior sandblasted and recoated, plus interior spot cleaning and recoating
A new standby generator — the existing one has a bad motor and a starter that doesn't reliably engage
Water main replacement along 58th Street, swapping aging asbestos cement and cast iron for ductile iron
95 lead service line replacements
One piece of good news on the bill: the city already raised rates following a 2024 rate study specifically to fund this bonding. EGLE's assessment is that user rates are not expected to increase further as a result of the project.
This is a city doing the right thing on a hard budget. Nothing here suggests a crisis. It suggests sixty-year-old infrastructure finally getting addressed.
Lead service lines: the one thing worth acting on
Of everything in this project, lead service lines are the item with a direct, personal answer for your address.
Fennville has lead and galvanized steel pipe downstream of lead service lines in its distribution system. The project replaces 95 of them — 17 tied to the 58th Street water main work, plus 78 scattered throughout the city.
What Michigan's Lead and Copper Rule means for you as a homeowner:
A "lead service line" is broader than you'd think. It includes lines made entirely of lead, lines made partly of lead, and lead goosenecks or pigtails between the main and your shutoff. Galvanized steel lines that are or ever were connected to lead must also be replaced.
Your water supply has to tell you. Utilities are required to notify property owners and occupants within 30 days of discovering — or suspecting — a lead or galvanized line at a premises.
Partial replacement is prohibited. Replacing only the public-side half can release lead particles. Michigan requires full replacement, main to shutoff.
The action level dropped. As of January 1, 2025, Michigan's lead action level is 12 parts per billion, down from 15.
What to do: call Fennville City Hall and ask what your service line material is recorded as in the city's inventory, and whether your address is on the replacement list for this project. The city has already performed service line verification and will confirm assumed galvanization before replacement. It's a two-minute phone call and it's the single most useful thing in this article.
One more thing worth knowing: even a copper or plastic service line doesn't rule out lead. Older household plumbing — solder joints, brass fixtures, pre-1980s fittings — can contribute lead on the private side of the meter, and that's on the homeowner, not the utility.
Expect discolored water during construction
When crews replace water main, sections of the system get isolated and re-pressurized. When the water tower comes offline for recoating, the city runs wells and opens hydrants to hold system pressure. Both of those things shift flow directions inside pipes that have decades of iron and mineral scale on their interior walls.
The result is discolored water — usually yellow, orange, or rusty brown. It's sediment, not contamination, and it typically clears on its own.
What to do when it happens:
Run a cold-water tap for several minutes until it clears. Start with an outside spigot or a basement utility sink if you have one.
Don't run hot water while it's discolored — you'll pull sediment into your water heater tank, where it settles and stays.
Don't do laundry until it clears. Iron-laden water sets stains in fabric, and bleach makes it permanent.
If it hasn't cleared after a few hours, call the city. That's what the number is for.
The city has said it will provide written notice to customers whose service will be interrupted for water main tie-ins, and it has prior experience taking the tower offline for maintenance.
Compliance is a floor, not a ceiling
Here's the part most people find confusing, so we'll say it plainly.
EGLE's standards are health-based. They exist to keep you from getting sick. They are not designed to guarantee that your water tastes good, doesn't stain a toilet bowl, doesn't leave spots on glasses, or doesn't shorten the life of your water heater.
Fennville's water can be fully compliant and still leave you with:
Iron staining — orange or brown marks in sinks, tubs, and toilet tanks, and a metallic taste. Given four wells with documented iron content and the fact that Well No. 7's water bypasses the Iron Removal Plant, some iron reaching taps is expected.
Hardness — scale on fixtures, spots on dishes, soap that doesn't lather, reduced water heater efficiency. Western Michigan groundwater is hard, and municipal systems generally don't soften.
Chlorine taste and odor — Fennville disinfects with 12.5 percent sodium hypochlorite injected at the well houses. That's how the water gets kept safe on the way to your house. It's also why it can taste like a swimming pool.
Cloudiness — Well No. 4A has documented cloudy-water issues attributed to trapped carbon dioxide and dissolved oxygen. If a glass looks milky and clears from the bottom up, that's air, and it's harmless.
None of that means the city is failing. It means municipal treatment and point-of-use quality are two different problems. If any of it bothers you, that's a fixable problem at the house — but it's your call, not a requirement.
If you're on a private well outside city limits
Plenty of Fennville-area homes — out toward Ganges, Glenn, Pullman, and across Manlius and Clyde — aren't on the city system at all. If that's you, none of the above applies. Nobody is testing your water but you.
Worth knowing:
The Allegan County Health Department does not currently offer water sampling to the general public. You'll need a state-certified lab.
The CDC recommends testing private wells annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, and pH.
Common private-well contaminants in this county include coliform bacteria, nitrate, nitrite, chloride, sulfate, sodium, hardness, iron, manganese, and arsenic.
Roughly 89 percent of wells in Allegan County are finished in glacial deposits rather than bedrock — shallow, sandy aquifers that are more responsive to surface conditions than deep bedrock wells are.
If you've never tested, test. If you last tested when you bought the house, test again.
What we'd do if it were our house
Call City Hall and ask what your service line is made of, and whether your address is on the lead service line replacement list.
Watch for construction notices and follow the discolored-water steps above when they come.
Read the annual water quality report. Fennville publishes a Consumer Confidence Report every year by July 1. It's free, it's specific to your system, and almost nobody reads it.
If you're on a private well, get a current test. Bacteria, nitrates, pH at minimum.
Decide separately whether the aesthetic stuff bothers you. Staining, scale, taste, and odor are worth solving only if they're actually affecting your house. Get the water tested first and treat what's actually there — not what a salesperson guesses.
